Originally built in 1992, the North Brigade skatepark in Cologne has been an integral part of the German skateboard scene since day one. Hardly any other park in the country has been home to as many influential competitions and events on a national and international throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. But as skatepark designs evolved over recent years, the North Brigade began losing its relevance, reflected by rapidly declining visitor numbers.
In 2013, we created a master plan for the North Brigade’s operating team to reestablish the park as one of Europe’s leading skate facilities. This plan needed to win over local parks and recreation officials, as well as potential sponsors, and funding partners. The final skatepark design was realized in 2014 and covers all technical variations of skateboarding – from street to bowl riding – and attracts all levels of proficiency from pros to new beginners. The park design also accommodates other sports, the training of next-generation talent, as well as international events.
The complete redesign of the 2,800-square-meter park area was implemented in close cooperation with architect Christian Thomas and Anker Rampen construction firm.
